Dhoom (2) machale, par jyaada nahin...

Watched Dhoom:2 last sunday in a cozy Asian theater of NYC with a small group of friends. The movie had got good reviews, so we had high expectations. But, just like most other sequels, this one also proved to be a disappointment. A very humble request to producers & directors is "Please do not make a sequel if you can not make it as refreshing as Lage Raho Munnabhai.".

Still, I would say its worth a watch; for its stunts, Aishwarya and Ash-Hrithik combination. Presentation of the stunts are quite world class. Though it does not look as real as Bond movies (which could be because we are not used to watching our stars doing such splendid actions), but at the same time its not technically flawed as it used to be just a few years back. The best bet for male viewers would, off course, be Ash! She has got a funky-kind-of-mod-gal role after a very long time and has done a perfect justice, at least in terms of looks (we all know limitations in her acting skills). Even after being on the wrong side of 30, she looks as fresh & young as ever and would give run for money to the junior actresses. I think this is the first time she has worn sexy shorts & tops almost throughout the movie. The most sensational topic of discussion these days is the pairing of Ash & Hrithik, specially the cute smooch scene. Though there is not much sizzle between them, nonetheless, together they look great on screen. The smooch scene is a first for both of them and is executed very gracefully.

One hypothesis could be that Ash is preparing her fans for much bolder scenes ;) in her upcoming Hollywood movies. The reasoning is that there was no need for her to break her good image (of non-exposing & non-kissing actress) and that she lost some big Hollywood opportunities for maintaining that image. Anyways, only time (or Abhishek too?) could tell what is in her mind.

Some other aspects of the movie are pretty weak too. I would start with comedy which still is not bad, but not at all fresh. Uday Chopra's role and his confrontation with Abhishek is simply an extension from Dhoom and is based on exactly same template. Script is not as crisp either and lacks the pace & excitement of the first part. Bipasha Basu's role is the most confusing. While she makes a bit of sense in the first half, significance of her role in the second half remained a mystery. While Uday must have had nice time flirting with her (an opportunity which he might never get outside his home production), but those sequences are pretty dumb and so is their English-Hindi language drama.

Music is no good either. Only the title song is worth listening again. You are bound to compare it with Dhoom Machaale Dhoom, but would soon find out that it is nowhere near the earlier intensity and simply lacks the magical effect.

So, overall, its just a little above average movie which can be seen for a decent time-pass and for the beauty of Ash, but can be skipped by not-so-regular movie-goers. I would give it a 6 out of 10.
